The pathology of organized religion

So another Christmas has come and gone.

Peace on earth, good will towards all living creatures.

It’s a beautiful sentiment, and what a great world it would be if we could all live up to that. But sadly, we don’t. We live in a world full of hatred, violence, and poverty and it seems that the last thing on people’s mind every other day of the year is peace, goodwill, and unity.

Now I know it’s tempting to blame the individual here. Whenever we are pinned in the corner on these issues, whenever somebody starts wagging the moral finger, we always blame the individual.  It is easy. We blame broken genetics (or our primitive violent selves), broken souls, unevolved consciousness, or whatever. Whatever it is that makes this world suck so much, it has to do with the individual.
