The Secret as propoganda

May 19th, 2009 by Michael Sharp

It occurred to me the other day that this whole big “The Secret” phenomenon, what with the “law of attraction” and all that other hokum, has done more to damage the cause of spirituality and awakening on this earth than anything else in recent memory.

I mean think about it.

A couple years ago some yoyo+friends decided to put together a DVD telling the world how all you have to do is stay passive, positive, and “attract” and the universe, which doesn’t deal in negatives (tell that to all those people losing their homes), will send you what you want.  It’s that easy, said the man who was almost crying at the thought of how he had “attracted,” via a vision board, his multi-million dollar California mansion.

Now, fast forward a few years and the globe is in economic crises. I know several people on the brink of financial collapse and the state of California is so badly off that Mr. Terminator himself has suggested legalizing marijuana as a way to cope with the catastrophic budget shortfalls. Waiting, waiting, waiting….

April 4th, 2009 by Michael Sharp

I’d like to say that the persistence and tenacity of the illusion is stunning, but I can’t.  I’m not surprised. We have created such a powerful system of illusion and suppression that it is no wonder it is so hard to break out of. Somebody could walk right up to you and say, hey this is the truth, and if that truth didn’t fit into one of the pre-categorized little “truth boxes” created for you by your parents, your school, the media, and your universities, you probably wouldn’t even hear it. It would go in one oblivious ear and out the other and you would continue on in your slow spiral downwards towards the inevitable death of your physical body.

The question is, is that what you want?

Do you believe that all the pain and suffering and death on this earth is the inevitable result of the natural, cosmological, or divine constitution of this universe?

Do you want to end your days on this earth in the sucky old world illusion of pain, duality, and suffering?

If so then all I have to say to you is, good bye. Read the rest of this entry »

Law of Attraction and the Economic Crises

March 21st, 2009 by Michael Sharp

Ok ok.

I have to ask.

Does anybody see the irony?

Just a couple years ago a few very witty people made enough money to buy themselves a California mansion or two by revealing (cue Hollywood fanfare and reverberating voice) The Secret of the Universe.

The LAW of Attraction.

Were you a part of that?

Did you sign up.

Did you view the DVD?

Did you buy the book?

Did you do your vision board?

Did you set your intent? Read the rest of this entry »

Had enough yet?

March 19th, 2009 by Michael Sharp

Fear, fear, fear.

Be afraid, be afraid, be afraid.

Terror, terror, terror.

The end of the world is here.

SARS is going to wipe out the population.

George W. Bush is going to crown himself blood sucking, child sacrificing lizard king and never abdicate for ever and ever.

Obama is the Devil (I imagine “they” will start saying this shortly) and, as the economy collapses, and doom spreads across this earth, there will be concentration camps before you know it.

Fear, Fear, Fear.

Be afraid, be afraid, be afraid.

Terror, terror, terror.

Are you getting their message yet? Read the rest of this entry »

Little Warriors – Right Action in a Wrong World

February 5th, 2009 by Michael Sharp

Fighting to stop the wrong in this worldI had an interesting day today. I spent three hours of my afternoon in a Little Warriors workshop dealing with child sexual abuse. To be honest, I didn’t really learn many new things. As a sociologist, I am fully aware of the horrific level of child sexual abuse that occurs on this planet. It’s stunning. Sit down in a room of ten women, and odds are high that at least five of them have been sexually abused. Odds are good that every one of them will have a story. Statistics show 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience abuse before they become adults, some repeatedly (and usually by members of their family, or close family friends!?).

And if you can believe it, that’s not even the worst part!

The worst part is that society turns a blind eye to the problem.

Despite the fact that children are being molested and raped on a daily basis, people pretend it doesn’t exist. Listen to the stories of survivors and you’ll see. Their parents did nothing, their sports group did nothing, the boyscout leaders did nothing, the schools did nothing, nothing! Despite the fact that it is happening all around us, we  pretend it doesn’t exist and in that pretension we let it happen again, and again, and again.

We have a systematic, organized, and deliberate blindness to the problem. Read the rest of this entry »

MADD at the “Law” of Attraction

January 15th, 2009 by Michael Sharp

So, today I wanted to talk about an organization called MADD or Mother’s Against Drunk Driving. For those who don’t know, this is an organization that was formed many years ago in response to the socially irresponsible practice of drunk driving. Basically this is a group of mothers who, having lost family members to some drunk driver, decided to get together and change the way society viewed drunk drivers. Their hope was that they could do something to stop the tragic waste of life that occurs when some “dipshit with a drink” runs down an innocent family.

And you know what, they did it.

MADD fundamentally changed the way people view drunk drivers and in that process had a major positive impact on the grim statistics. I know this for a fact because I remember what reality was like before they came along. I remember one night when I was seventeen getting stone cold drunk, getting behind the wheel of a huge tank of a car (solid metal, late 50s flared fender monster with deadly solid steal chrome grill) and, in a drunken stupor, losing control of my vehicle in a major city intersection. The pathology of organized religion

January 2nd, 2009 by Michael Sharp

So another Christmas has come and gone.

Peace on earth, good will towards all living creatures.

It’s a beautiful sentiment, and what a great world it would be if we could all live up to that. But sadly, we don’t. We live in a world full of hatred, violence, and poverty and it seems that the last thing on people’s mind every other day of the year is peace, goodwill, and unity.

Now I know it’s tempting to blame the individual here. Whenever we are pinned in the corner on these issues, whenever somebody starts wagging the moral finger, we always blame the individual.  It is easy. We blame broken genetics (or our primitive violent selves), broken souls, unevolved consciousness, or whatever. Whatever it is that makes this world suck so much, it has to do with the individual. Like Michelle Obama recently said: Read the rest of this entry »

Egotistical, polysyllabic, multi-metaphoric obsfucation

December 24th, 2008 by Michael Sharp

Egotistical, polysyllabic, multi-metaphoric obsfucation (EPMO) occurs when a diminished and damaged ego uses unnecessary linguistic or metaphoric puffery to convey to others that it is superior in some way, or that it understands something that it does not. You often find EPMO in literary, academic, and/or intellectual circles. Linguistic EPMO is more common than metaphoric EPMO though metaphoric EPMO does exist, especially in artistic and/or esoteric circles.

The only know cure (and defense) for EPMO is a good slap in the face with a fish. Failing that, giggles and some childish finger pointing often does the trick. If you are a perpetrator of EPMO, you can self treat by repeating, several times, with deep intonation, bended head, and downcast eyes.

“Huck mir nisht a chynick, and I don’t mean efsher.”

Confronting our Immortality

December 21st, 2008 by Michael Sharp

So, recently my wife and I had a conversation with a wife and her man. It was a fascinating conversation that broached several topics ranging from entheogens to the nature of reality to the best way to awaken people, and so on. At one point, the conversation even broached the topic of immortality and the survival of consciousness after death. I of course came down on the side of immortality. I’ve seen with my own eyes the reality of the soul, the preservation of identity past death, and the awesome wisdom and intelligence of the Fabric of Consciousness, so there’s nothing anybody can say to me that would convince me that when we die, consciousness ends. But this women had a different idea. Although she was very open to the idea of “higher consciousness,” and had apparently journeyed the highways of higher consciousness once or twice in her life, she did not believe that consciousness survived death. She believed that when you die, your body merges back into the cosmic energy soup and you end. Consciousness goes on, of course, but you don’t. Read the rest of this entry »
